stop for a second

sit on your urban sofa

see if you can find

                          silence

 

switch off your T.V.              and washer

                           and radio                and dryer

 

send your kids away

give your wife the Eaton's card

 

turn off your central heating's hsssss

 

close all your windows

                               and doors

cut your power and water

disconnect flourescent hummm

 

go deep in your basement

 

        and wait

 

        patiently

 

        until

 

        there are no sirens

                                   or barking dogs

 

and wait until you can only hear

that spider walking across your arm

carefully squeeze

                        hold your breath
